Fragrant Fires, 30 Days of Magic

A few odd spells to control cosmetic aspects of fires.

Fragrant Fire

Muto Ignem 10, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The modified fire emits smoke with a reduced and pleasant odour, typically floral or oceanic breeze; replacing the smoky and woody aromas typical to fires. The aroma is chosen when the spell is cast.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +2 Sun)

Direct the Smoke of Fire

Rego Ignem 10, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The caster dictates an exact direction to focus the smoke of the targeted fire. The caster may change the direction by concentrating.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +2 Sun)

Spells to Observe Through Fire

A few spells akin to Eyes of the Flame (InIg35, ArM p.141) which enhance the range of observation a Magus can perform, and also demonstrate a fair use for the Faerie Duration: Fire. When writing these spells I found the Fire duration limiting and overtly expensive in terms of how many levels it adds to spells. It really should not be a +3 Magnitude adjustment given how limited the mechanics of its use are, and how rarely it is used in-play.

Ears of the Flame

Intellego Ignem 35, R: Arcane, D: Concentration, T: Individual

Lets you hear a fire and anything within its radius of heat and light up to the size of a large campfire which you have an Arcane Connection to.

(Base 10, +4 Arc, +1 Conc)

And then,

Ears of the Faerie Flame

Intellego Ignem 45, R: Arcane, D: Fire, T: Individual, Faerie

Lets you hear a fire up to the size of a large campfire within its radius of heat and light which you have an Arcane Connection to, while it still burns.

(Base 10, +4 Arc, +3 Fire)

Then two variants designed for use with an Intangible Tunnel which makes the spell far lower level.

Eavesdrop by the Fire

Intellego Ignem 25, R: Touch, D: Concentration, T: Individual

Lets you see and hear a fire up to the size of a large campfire within its radius of heat and light which you can touch. The intention is to combine this spell with an Intangible Tunnel to a particular fire.

(Base 10, +1 Touch, +1 Conc, +1 additional sense)

Spells using the Faerie Duration: Fire, p1

As part of the November A-Spell-A-Day challenge here is a few Duration: Fire Spells. This one may be useful for craftsmen or to direct the flow of a normal fire.

Direct the Heat of Fire

Rego Ignem 20, R: Voice, D: Fire, T: Individual, Faerie

The caster dictates an exact direction to focus the heat of the targeted fire. The fire itself does not move unless it is able to also expand by burning materials in the dictated direction. The caster may change the direction by concentrating.

(Base 3, +2 Voice, +3 Fire)

Lost Spells (part 9) Acids and Fire Water

Some spells based upon various supernatural liquid substances, and it appears acids especially have become slightly harder to create from older editions…

This first spell for conjuring a corrosive acid could be created upon the target without the Rego requisite, which technically makes it an easier spell to cast. In prior editions, there must have been some complexity for targeting and also for different material types, however in 5th edition it is far simpler to accept that the acid itself is resisted, so therefore the Rego component will hit automatically, or the acid may be created upon the target directly.

Globe of Corroding Waters

Creo Aquam / Rego 30, R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual

Creates a globe of acid which is flung at the target inflicting 20 damage, and will corrode items and people alike.

(Base 20, +2 Voice)

This spell is cosmetically different, but essentially a very similar effect using concentration to constantly supply fresh acid.

Dragon’s Bile

Creo Aquam 35, R: Voice, D: Concentration, T: Individual

Creates a spray of acid that arcs out from the caster’s hand, covering the target. The spray is 1/2 foot across at the peak (the caster’s hand) and 2 paces across at the base 5 paces away. Damage from the acid is +20, and the acid damages everything it hits.

(Base 20, +2 Voice, +1 Concentration)

The last spell I changed from Sight/Conc to be Touch/Moon as I think it better suits how such a substance will be used. It might be a siege defense tool or a horrible bath. It becomes an unnatural fluid inflicting damage at the level, as per the Spell Guidelines.

Fire of the Deep

Muto Aquam / Ignem 20, R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Individual

This spell transforms about a barrel’s worth of water into a non-viscous fluid that burns and destroys like fire, inflicting +4 damage. It is not burning oil, as other spells produce, but a substance which itself is, in many respects, fire. It is more intense than ordinary fire, but similar in its effects – paper is burnt to ash, wood charred and eventually consumed, stone merely blackened and heated. Unlike ordinary fire, however, this does not spread (though it may light other fires), nor can it be doused by mundane means, so long as the spell is maintained.

(Base 4 for a highly unnatural substance, +1 Touch, +3 Moon)

Lost Spells (part 2) Unnatural Fire

A strange and dangerous spell, although there are times when having a fire which burns while wet might be very handy. The original lasted for as long as the caster concentrated which makes sense as a demonstration of the transformation, but not as a true device of dangerous and unnatural fire. The spell is more dangerous than converting water to oil, as so many other water sources may be present which are uncontrolled.

Unquenched Flame

Muto Ignem / Aquam 20, R: Voice, D: Sun, T: Individual

This spell changes a fire of a size up to bonfire so it unnaturally consumes water as fuel, as though it were oil or wood. The fire would be particularly dangerous in a wet forest, or on a marsh, and could be used to actually burn a river.

(Base 4, +2 Voice, +2 Sun)

A few quirky fire spells

Here area few simple fire effects. Primarily for travelers, although many will have tricky wider applications. Firstly a cheeky way to extend the range of a Faerie Duration: Fire spell. The affected fire still needs fuel, but this effect allows for easier maintenance and longer effects.

Fire of Little Fuel

Muto Ignem 15, R: Touch, D: Fire, T: Individual, Faerie.

Changes a fire to consume almost no fuel, and to be more resistant to disruptive effects of wind and rain. A fire under this spells effect burns for three to four times longer on the same supply of materials, and can withstand strong wind and rain.

(Base 3 for an unnatural effect, +1 Touch, +3 Fire)

The second effect is intended to make a fire safer around people. I had an odd thought that it might also be a useful fast-cast defense against Ignem spells too.

Fire That Burns No Man

Muto Ignem 20, R: Touch, D: Fire, T: Individual, Faerie.

The effected fire can warm but not burn humans. All other aspects of the fire remain unaffected. The targeted fire may be as large as a house fire.

(Base 3 unnatural, +1 Touch, +3 Fire, +1 extra target size)

Then an effect designed for use in the wilderness, on ships, or anywhere a fire is could be useful, but the environment is not conductive to flames.

Fire for the Boatman, Shepherd, and Scribe

Creo Ignem / Muto 25, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Circle.

Creates an unnatural fire which can warm but not burn people or man made products (treated or manufactured items), but will cook raw ingredients as normal. The fire’s size is determined by the circle drawn during casting, and may be as small as a candle or as large as a campfire. The fire can be extinguished prematurely by breaking the circle.

(Base 4 to create a fire hot enough to cook with, +1 for Muto effect, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, +1 complexity for multiple exclusions, +0 Circle)

Some simple fire spells for Ars Magica pyromaniacs

Designing fire spell that inflict damage is darn easy in Ars Magica. There are very detailed guidelines in the rules and many evocative examples in Creo Ignem; such as Ball of Abysmal Flame at level 35 and Pilum of Fire at level 20, p 140.

Pondering a House Flambeau fire wizard, and I wanted some slight variations on these spells. Firstly I wanted more spells to inflict damage directly, and also at a lower level so a junior wizard could learn them (and I really like Pilum of Fire’s name, so have used that as a theme).

Spear of Fire

Creo Ignem 10, R: Voice, D: Mom, T: Ind

A short spear-shaped burst of fire flies from your hand, inflicting +5 damage.

(Base 4, +2 Voice)

This might seem an underpowered effect however +5 damage is still not irrelevant and at such a low level a more powerful caster will be able to penetrate through far more magic resistance. Remember too that while almost every soldier will be armored enough to stop this spell’s damage, many wizards depend on their Parma Magica alone for defense; rarely wearing armour. It is a long way from +20 or +30 damage inflicted by the powerful spells in core, so perhaps a +10 damage variant is more desirable.

Lance of Fire

Creo Ignem 15, R: Voice, D: Mom, T: Ind

A spear-shaped burst of fire flies from the caster’s hand, inflicting +10 damage.

(Base 5, +2 Voice)

All these spells are single use, which wasn’t what I though of when picturing a pyromaniac Flambeau. I saw a fire wielding madman which flames pouring from his hands continuously. Also consider that immolating a target over many combat rounds will be far more damaging and wonderfully intimidating for onlookers. Thankfully creating these effects is darn easy too; they’re almost the same.

Jet of Flame

Creo Ignem 20, R: Voice, D: Concentration, T: Ind

A thin jet of flame pours from the caster’s hands inflicting +10 damage to anything it touches. The caster can move their hand to re-target the jet for as long as they concentrate.

(Base 5, +2 Voice, +1 Concentration)

Useful for hosing an area in fire, burning as the caster pleases. Damage as low as +10 is powerful when applied every combat round, and if multicast using mastery could be aimed at several targets.

Immolate Miscellanea

Creo Ignem 20, R: Touch, D: Diameter, T: Ind

The object touched bursts into flames for two minutes, requiring twenty soak checks against +10 damage. The fire will also ignite nearby objects and spread naturally, which may create additional problems for the target.

(Base 10, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter)

I didn’t think there was much use for this level and the core rulebook has Cloak of Flame as a higher level spell, but then recalled the Opening the Intangible Tunnel spell, for which Touch spells are needed or by using a talisman to extend reach. Perhaps a disgruntled Magi will find a use there.

Then a simple cosmetic spell to bathe the caster in flames. It could as easily be created by using an illusion (Creo Imagonem) however I like using fire as the Art here.

Immolation of the Cowardly Pyromancer

Creo Ignem 5, R: Personal, D: Concentration, T: Individual

The caster is covered in a fire which can be felt but neither burns nor heats significantly.

(Base 4 to create an unnatural fire, +1 Conc)

And lastly for the arrogant pyromaniac who is not afraid to really burn. I don’t expect many wizards to bother learning this, but it was interesting to create and might be spontaneously cast. Perhaps to be rid of fleas?

Immolation of the Haughty Pyromancer

Creo Ignem 5, R: Personal, D: Concentration, T: Individual

The caster is covered in a fire which inflicts +5 damage per round.

(Base 4 to create inflicting 5+ damage, +1 Conc)
