Ice Spells (part four) Moving upon the ice

Another in a series of spells themed around Ice Spells and arctic magic, continuing from Ice Spells (part one, two, and three). There is fair probability that I’m just having fun with spells at some point through this post.

When writing the Ars Magica spells to mimic Eliza’s powers in Frozen I wrote Footstep upon the Fjord as a Perdo Ignem spell to freeze the surface of the water and missed a rather obvious version which uses Rego Aquam instead.

Footsteps upon the Glacier

Rego Aquam 15, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Part

The water and snow beneath the targets feet is changed to a thick platform of ice as they move, and graded to provide more comfortable surface to walk on. The ice begins naturally melting when the target moves away.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, +1 Part)

Sure Step of the Arctic Wanderer

Muto Aquam 15, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Part

Gants the target more stability moving across ice by altering the surface beneath them to be more tactile and dry. The surface reverts to normal after the target passes.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, +1 Part)

And then onto some quick small magnitude spells to make traveling easier.

Paws of the Polar Bear, for Beasts

Muto Animal 10, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The targeted animal’s feet are transformed into the paws of a polar bear, which are suited for travel across icy surfaces and in cold climates.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +2 Sun)

Paws of the Polar Bear

Muto Corpus / Animal 5, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The target’s feet are changed into paws of a polar bear, which are suited for travel across icy surfaces and in cold climates.

(Base 2, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, requisite free)

Boots of the Polar Bear

Muto Animal / Herbam 5, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The target’s boots are changed to mimic attributes of the paws of a polar bear, becoming broader with small claws for grip.

(Base 2, +1 Touch, +2 Sun)

Ice Spells (part three) Enduring ice and ice hounds

Continuing from Ice Spells (part one and two), these are utility and empowerment spells.

Circle of Unbreakable Ice

Muto Aquam / Terram 15, R: Touch, D: Ring, T: Circle

All ice within the circle is made very strong and non-brittle, gaining resistance to shattering and the resilience of stone.

(Base 4 for highly unnatural substance,+1 Touch, +2 Ring)

Enduring Ice

Perdo Ignem 25, R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Part

The ice touched will not melt for the spell duration, remaining below freezing. The spell can effect up to 560 cubic feet of ice.

(Base 4, +1 Touch, +3 Moon, +1 Part)

By way of servants I wanted a spell which allowed the caster to get reasonable utility for a servant, and the idea of a guard dog and sled dog came to mind immediately. There have been spells created for animating stone bears, statues and the like and ice is very similar in terms of complexity.

Shape the Frozen Hound

Creo Aquam / Rego Animal 25, R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Individual

This spell creates a size +0 dog shaped from ice, and animates it under the caster’s control so it can follow simple commands. The Animal requisite grants the animation the behaviours and habits instinctive to trained sled dogs.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +3 Moon, +1 detailed shape, +1 Rego)

Shackles of Frozen Ice from Houses of Hermes: Societies is a great spell however I wanted something with more utility which allows the caster to choose the size of the area, and also has a far greater area.

Cirque of the Frozen Ice

Rego Aquam 25, R: Voice, D: Sun, T: Part

The targeted area of water is turned into ice and will remain frozen for the duration. When the spell expires the ice will begin to melt normally. The caster can choose how much of the water to affect and what simple shape, up to 5,600 cubic feet of water can be changed. If an object is targeted refer to Shackles of Frozen Ice (HoH:S p35).

(Base 3, +2 Voice, +2 Sun, +1 Part, +1 size)

In the last post there was a spell which made ice tougher, and now this is a spell which makes it soft and dry- it is certainly unnatiral ice, but perhaps more useful for equipment and sleeping on.

Object of Malleable Ice

Muto Aquam 25, R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Part

The ice targeted becomes unnaturally soft, dry, and flexible, but still retains its basic shape. The force required to break the ice remains unchanged.

(Base 4, +1 Touch, +3 Moon, +1 Part)

Perhaps this last effect for dry and soft ice is getting a little crazy. All the new spells for Ars Magica can be found here.

Ice spells (part two) Shaping and blocking with ice

Following again the spells relating to ice and snow, and all the other frosty effects from a while ago (the Wall from GoT, a series on Frozen (posts 2, 3, 4), and spells for cold climates). It seemed that my Ice Magus for Ars Magica was missing a basic spell to drop a huge block of ice in place, encase something in ice, and a way to shape it easily; sonand these spell effects add this capacity.

The intent is to create a barrier of ice for defence or strategic purposes, which might also be used to crush opponents.

Obstructive Ice Block

Creo Aquam 30, R: Voice, D: Moon, T: Individual

This spell creates a large block of ice in a simple shape (walls, rings, arcs) and orientation chosen by the caster within range, up to 5600 cubic feet of ice; akin to a wall roughly 6 feet tall, 3 feet thick, and 300 feet long (roughly 90 yards); for the duration. A Finesse check is required for particularly fine placement or targeting specif people.

(Base 3, +1 simple shapes, +2 Voice, +3 Moon, +1 Size)

Then a spell similar to The Mystical Carpenter (ReTe25, Cov p.51) this effect is for carving and shaping ice to a desired shape using Rego magic. Combining that with a previous spell which makes the ice as strong as metal might grant some wider applications.

The Mystical Ice Carver

Rego Aquam 25, R: Touch, D: Momentary, T: Part

The targeted ice is shaped as if worked upon as an ice carving. The spell affects a large volume, or even a part of huge ice formations, up to 5600 cubic feet.

While the spell is intended to be used to carve specific useful shapes in the ice it is also possible to carve out space within the ice as a cavity or to destabilise an area of ice. A Perception + Finesse check is required to confirm the quality of the work, with an initial ease factor of 6 for simple shapes.

(Base 5, +1 Touch, +1 Part, +1 flexibility, +1 size)

A memory from a previous edition, is the effect to totally envelop the target in conjured ice. It has since also been made into a Magic the Gathering card, which is well, nice?

Encase in Ice

Creo Aquam 20, R: Voice, D: Sun, T: Indivdiual

The target is surrounded in ice, potentially encasing the target. Enveloped targets may attempt to break free, see Shackles of Frozen Ice (ReAq20, HoH:S p.35). If the target is too large the ice will cover an area up to 560 cubic feet.

(Base 3, +2 Voice, +2 Sun, +1 flexibility in shape)

Ice spells (part one) Transform ice

This quick post follows Ars Magica spells for the creation of The Wall from Game of Thrones, a series based on Frozen (posts 2, 3, 4), and a few spells for cold climates. These spells are more like the tools a wizard could have, rather than theatrical effects based upon TV and film.

Vacillate Between Earth and Ice

Muto Terram / Aquam 25, R: Voice, D: Diameter, T: Part

The Terram based material affected is briefly transformed into ice. The maximum target size is determined by material type, from ten cubic paces for earth, a cubic pace for stone, and a cubic foot for metals. If the selected material is larger than these limits, then only the smaller area is transformed.

(Base 3 to change earth to ice, +2 to effect metal, +2 Voice, +1 Diameter, +1 Part)

Transmute into Ice

Muto Terram / Aquam 15, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The targeted object is transformed into ice, affecting up to a cubic foot of material. Requisites are required when cast for any non-terram components.

(Base 3, +1 for general approach, +1 Touch, +2 Sun)

Subsume the Frigid Beast

Rego Aquam 25, R: Sight, D: Concentration, T: Part

This spell alters the ice within the target area so that it is transformed into steam. Anything within the target area will fall as they lack support, and items resting upon these surfaces will be quickly encased when the spell is ended.

If the spell is targeted beneath a specific spot, such as beneath a particular creature a targeting roll is required. The effect is designed to affect a bowl shaped area, with a volume up to 5600 cubic feet, although the maximum volume is not required.

(Base 3, +3 Sight, +1 Conc, +1 Part, +1 size)

Object of Unbreakable Ice

Muto Aquam / Terram 15, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The ice object touched is made very strong and non-brittle, gaining resistance to shattering and the resilience of stone. The object may be as large as a small pond.

(Base 4 for highly unnatural substance,+1 touch, +2 sun)

This might have been even lower level except using Concentration allows for the ice material to be moved as steam or have the spell end after only a moment and the ice returns.

Spells for Cold Climates

Here are more spells that suit a Magus specializing in frigid climates, many of the other CrAq & PeIg spells were inspired by Frozen across the blog posts last year, where these are instead effects that would be needed for life in the region.

Ward Against Winter’s Cold

Rego Ignem 15, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

Target is protected against all normal cold and supernatural effects inflicting +5 damage.

(Base 4, +1 Touch, +2 Sun)

This ward protects in the same manner as the Ward Against Heat and Flame (Ars p.143).

Then moving on to a more mythic spell which surround the caster in toughened armour of ice. I like the idea that a specialist will find benefits and alternatives which suit their magic rather than mundane or obvious means.

Armour of Unbreakable Ice

Creo Aquam / Muto Terram 15, R: Personal, D: Sun, T: Individual

The caster is encased in a thick armour of unnaturally resilient ice, which offers protection akin to skin of metal armour. The ice moves with the caster, adjusting to their movements which provides an additional 6 Protection and 3 Load.

Without some extra tolerance to cold conditions the caster will find themselves uncomfortably chilled, loosing a Fatigue level per diameter of exposure.

(Base 4 for highly unnatural substance with Muto requisite, +2 Sun, +1 very strong with Terram requisite)

Aside – I’m not sure what the correct adjustment for Protection and Load should be. Ice itself wouldn’t provide much additional Protection from damage  (base 3), but when the ice is further made highly unnatural (base 4 with Muto to have flexibility and become like armour), and then has additional mag for toughness with a Terram requisite it feels right to me that the strength of metal and the unnatural attributes would provide a benefit better than normal armour can offer.

There is also no steel full armour akin to a contiguous skin-suit, as even full plate has links, gaps, and problems of being a set of interconnected parts. This magical ice armour does not have these limitations. I also considered a Rego requisite to have the armour move with the wearer but am not convinced that it is needed.

Rather than special glasses this spell allows the caster to see in the worst snow storms and tough conditions.

Clear Sight of the Arctic Fox

Intellego Aquam 15, R: Personal, D: Sun, T: Vision

The caster can see through snow and ice, which appear as highly translucent shadows of their previous images. This allows the caster to see through barriers and obstructions, and clearly in snowstorms.

(Base 1, +2 Sun, +4 Vision)

Lastly a never melting ice block might be handy outside the region to provide an instant cold room in warmer lands. It’s a very simple and low level effect.

Persistent Circle of Ice

Creo Aquam 10, R: Touch, D: Circle, T: Individual

Conjures a block of ice within the drawn circle, shaped to the size of the circle. The ice will persist until the circle is broken. Anything else within the circle will be encapsulated.

(Base 3, +1 Touch, +2 Circle)
