2x Lost spells (part 16) Illusory Guards, 30 Days of Magic

Some illusion spells inspired from an old 4e Ars Magica spell list with revisions as I didn’t follow what the old spell actually intended.

Illusion of the Patrolling Guardsman

Creo Imaginem 15, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

Makes an image of a clothed and equipped person that can make noise. When cast the behaviour of the illusion is decided. The illusory person can move about, speak, and behave as a human does.

(Base 2, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, +1 move in a prescribed manner, +1 intricacy)

Very similar to the …Phantasm of the Human Form (CrIm25, Ars p.144) the material difference here is that the spell is designed to allow a fixed path and action and a range reduction.

Illusion of the Frozen Guardsman

Rego Imaginem 25, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

The target’s image appears to be doing what the caster desires, while the target separates their physical actions from their visual appearance. The image will not reflect the target’s actions unless it is returned to overlapping their body, or by the caster concentrating. The target can move up to 100 paces away from their image.

(Base 5 for up to 100 paces away from the body, +1 Touch, +1 for an additional sense, +2 Sun, +1 Changing image)

This spell allows a guardsman to appear to be standing still while they wander elsewhere, which has advantages for Magi and companions alike performing covert actions within plain sight.

A forced doppelgänger in Ars Magica?

Reading through some of the linked sites from Project Redcap reminded me of a spell from a few Ars editions ago – the Exchange Between Prison Bars (was it in the 3e Grimoire?). This spell switched the images of two people. From 3rd edition days the targets were a lot more fluid and debatable. In 5th edition the spells tend to have a single target or “pay” for a group target, although it is certainly possible to have non-standard targets too.

Here is a variant for 5th edition Ars Magica.

Exchange Between Bars

Muto Imaginem 25, R: Voice, D: Sun, T: Special

All four sensations of the person targeted and the caster are switched.

(Base 4, +2 Voice, +2 Sun, +1 additional special target)

Nice, but a Rego spell is really doing the switch properly, although it’s probably superfluous to actually switch positions. Maybe handy in some combat circumstances or to capture an enemy.

Teleport Between Bars

Rego Corpus 20, R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Special

The target and the caster exchange placed via teleportation as long as they are within 50 paces of each other. Requisites may be required

(Base 5, +2 Voice, +1 additional special target)

Magical device: Libram of Imaginary Pages

A quick idea for an item which would be useful in the lab to assist with cost savings on upkeep and also an Imaginem specialisation.

Libram of Imaginary Pages

(Lesser enchanted device: Cr/Mu/Re/Im 30)

The libram appears to be a piece of treated oak carved to look like a very small closed notebook. Upon command the libram will create an illusory sheet of writing paper, which can be used to scribe notes. Created as a level 25 spell effect, modified for +5 levels to allow 24 uses per day.

An Imaginary Page

Creo Imagonem / Muto / Rego 25, R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Individual

The virtual paper includes a tactile illusion so that slight resistance is felt by the writer when being changed. When written upon the illusion reacts to the motions of the writing implement, so that ink is not needed to write on the surface.

The illusory pages can be moved about or placed in mid air, and altered as pleases the writers just like a normal piece of paper. The illusory pages can be created in three sizes: note/palm sized, large book sized, and table sized.

(CrIm base 2 for visual and tactile illusion, +1 Touch, +3 Moon, +1 can be moved around, +1 intricate text and drawings, +1 changeable image)
