A few Ice Spells (part fourteen) Shaping caves in Ice, 30 Days of Magic

Two more spells for ice, with flexibility built in to make them more likely to be useful. A tunnel could be a single room, or used to carve of a chunk, or shape a drain or ramp.

Tunnel Through the Ice

Perdo Aquam 30, R: Touch, D: Momentary, T: Part

Creates a passage within an ice flow. The tunnel defaults to a few paces wide by three paces tall by 100 paces long, however the shape may be modified by the caster into another simple geometric shape.

(Base 10, +1 Touch, +1 Part, +1 flexibility in shape, +1 size)

Then a similar effect which requires a Finesse skill check which counterbalances the lower base effect.

Hew a Dwelling Within the Ice

Rego Aquam 20, R: Touch, D: Momentary, T: Part

Carves a passage into a larger volume of ice, shaped to the caster’s desire, which requires a finesse check to determine the accuracy and potential safety of the hollow area.

(Base 4, +1 Touch, +1 Part, +1 flexibility in shape, +1 size)

Ice Spells (part thirteen) Turn people to ice

When I first thought about this spell I was considering the part in the movie Frozen when Anna is turned to ice, and then considered making it a killing spell – which would be fair given a base level of 25 is very close to the Perdo Corpus instant death of base 30. Instead, an opponent frozen for two minutes is likely to be at the mercy of the caster till they magically unthaw.

Curse of the Frozen Heart

Muto Corpus / Aquam 40, R: Voice, D: Diameter, T: Individual

The target human is turned to solid ice, reverting to normal after the spell expires.

(Base 25, +2 Voice, +1 Diameter)

And a variant for animals, which is far easier due to the different baseline level for turning an animal into an inanimate object.

Curse of the Frozen Hoof

Muto Animal / Aquam 30, R: Voice, D: Diameter, T: Individual

The target animal is turned to solid ice, reverting to normal after the spell expires.

(Base 15, +2 Voice, +1 Diameter)

Reduction of Ice to a Movable Block

Muto Aquam 25, R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Individual

Targeted ice is shrunk down in volume by 512 times (each dimension reduced to one eighth its size), up to 560 cubic feet of ice is reduced to around 1 cubic foot in size.

A False and Frozen Coin

Muto Aquam / Terram 25, R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Individual

A bundle of ice is transmuted into a handful of silver slivers and ingots which are useful for trade and barter. The caster may opt to make a finesse roll of 9+ to mimic more truly the detail of a real coin’s shape and engravings.

(Base 4, +1 Touch, +3 Moon, +1 complexity in shape)

Ice Spells (part seven) Some strange properties

As part of a November 2017 Ars Magica writing challenge – I’m doing one spell a day.

For these ice spells I was seeking effects which were highly supernatural, which makes them less likely to be frequently used but interesting for a specialist as they may find interesting ways of solving problems. These style of spells can be suggestions for other magical foci too.

Ice which Anchors the Mountains

Muto Aquam / Terram 25, R: Touch, D: Concentration, T: Part

The transformed ice becomes stronger and incredibly heavy, losing all its buoyancy and becoming very difficult to move. The ice is made even heavier than a noble metal; making it practically immovable in moderate quantities.

(Base 10 for a very unnatural effect, +1 Touch, +1 Conc, +1 Part)
